Favorite Banned Book

After looking back over some of the most challenged and banned books lists, I have to say my favorite banned book is 1961 Pulitzer Prize winner To Kill and Mockingbird by Harper Lee. It’s one of the most popular books of the 20th century. I think its popularity will continue, that it will speak to future generations for years to come.

Although the setting is in a small southern town during the Great Depression, Lee wrote this compelling story during the Civil Rights movement. How can anyone read this book without pondering the ugliness of prejudice and the horrible racial violence that is unfortunately part of our nation’s history? It stirred emotions in me about injustice, what I believe in and the state of today’s society that’s more diverse than ever. What an influence for equality, tolerance, acceptance, respect, and a fair justice system!

Why did I enjoy it so much? I have a special fondness for coming of age stories and peering into the fascinating minds of younger generations. The main characters are children but unforgettable characters in every sense of the word. In addition to its timeless lessons, I loved the humor and bits of mystery that Lee was able to interject without compromising the serious themes. My biggest regret is that Harper Lee only wrote this one novel, at least under her given name.

This is what I believe- Take It OR Leave It!

I believe that it's stupid to banned a book when its worse to watch a movie with profanity or nudity in it than it is to read it! At least children can't hear or see anything that they shouldn't! If you watch movies that involve drug use, profanity, nudity, and/or sexual activity I believe that you should have to proof of age and that's just the way it is! I hate how adults just leave their entertainment arould their homes and then their children get ahold of it and then the parents begin to wonder why the child is troubled with this decision! Please Just choose wisely what it is that you read and what you look at! Thats all I ask! That's What I Believe- Take It OR Leave It!
